Through the techniques used in debating, we aim to teach young people how to have more eye-opening and meaningful conversations. This is something you can easily practice with your child at home! ๐
Meaningful conversations are a way to get to know what the other speaker thinks and feels. They're about a mutually meaningful topic and are designed so both speakers can openly express themselves.
One of the fundamental skills in debating is the PEEL method. This helps us structure points in a way that presents a clear argument and links us back to the original topic. PEEL stands for POINT, EXPLAIN, EXAMPLE and LINK - keep reading to see how to use each section of the structure below ๐
1) POINT
Begin your conversation with a concise statement that establishes what you are going to discuss. This opening sentence is the most impactful and will make your conversation memorable to the audience.
2)
EXPLAIN Explain what your point actually means, defining any key terms or concepts. You should also try and answer the following two questions, 1) why is my point important? 2) why is my point true?
3)
EXAMPLEExplain how the example you just made relates to the point. This is a good opportunity to elaborate further and give more evidence if you feel it's necessary!
4)
LINKTo conclude, you should link your evidence and explanation back to the key point.
This exercise is a really fun way to improve your child's communication skills and have more purposeful conversations! Keep an eye on our
