Debating is an incredibly fun way for children to build on vital skills that aren't necessarily taught in the classroom, but the big question is HOW?
The art of debating enriches children with stronger communicative skills, builds their confidence and encourages listening and leadership. Whilst it isn't something necessarily taught in education settings, children who engage in debating are proven to be better at languages and problem-solving. Keep reading to learn about the key skills debating encourages:
1) Critical Thinking 🤔We talked about how to recognise critical thinking in your child in one of our
previous posts , but what does it actually mean?
Critical thinking is one of the key skills involved in debating, and allows children to use their natural curiosity to learn, ask important questions, and understand the world around them.
2) Boosting Confidence 💪Debating skills are an excellent confidence builder for all children. Through broadening their communication skills and giving them a voice to express themselves, it’s a no brainer that this inevitably boosts confidence!
3) Active Listening 👂The skills we encourage in debating give children the opportunity to learn how to listen to different perspectives, before taking the time to reflect and respond. This skill teaches young people to
really listen and retain information.
4) Communicating with Clarity 😊Communicating with clarity is a skill that can be applied to any situation! In essence, it teaches children to
think before they speak, and allows them to express their opinion in a clear and confident way.
4) Leadership and Teamwork 🤝 Leadership skills are a vital tool in debating - whilst our courses are structured around a whole host of fundamental skills, leadership gives children the opportunity to use their initiative and work constructively as a team where
all voices are considered!
